monetizing a blog: sell out with me tonight

You all may have noticed all the fun new banners cluttering up my margins and new redesign and wondered what it's all about. If you have ever been in my home, you know I am not a minimalist by any means, and I live for  packing any possible area to the gills.

My blog is no different, and while I am looking for steady work, I decided to try to make a couple bucks off off this little dog and pony show. [Tangent: Quite literally....a couple of bucks....but oh well. My long term dream is to actually make a living off my writing, so I thought I might as well start small....or miniscule, rather. It will be decades before I live out this fantasy I've had since age 10:]

The whole concept of monetizing my blog is completely overwhelming. I do not put a lot of stock in my business savvy...but I am good at googling and asking questions and figuring things out by trial and error. [Tangent: When I first started out with That Girl in the Wheelchair in 2010, I used Google Adsense which pays per click on their ads. Because I have the greatest friends in the world, they took this info and ran with it clicking hundreds of times, thus getting my account flagged for "suspicious fraudulent activity." Their intentions were good and it was something I never asked them to do...they were more or less trying to help me out. How were they to know that my account would get disabled? Yep, disabled. Ironic, right? ] As you know, I also often get ideas from the bloggers I follow so that is why I initially set up ad sponsorship programs through Passionfruit, com. It was super easy to implement, but aside from a couple ad swaps haven't had a lot of success with it.

Plan B Time. I decided to try out corporate affiliations. [Tangent: I know. I know. I am such a sell out and have I no dignity? Yadda yadda yadda. While some follow the guidance of Confuscious or Jesus, I tend to heed the call of novelty 90's tshirts.  "If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch."]
such a wise st. bernard.

After getting propositioned by Glasses USA, they encouraged me to try doing an affiliate program. I won't bore you with the particulars, because frankly, I don't understand 99% of what affiliate programs entail. [Tangent: Pepperjam....linkconnector! So many possible companies!!!] My interest was definitely peaked and I not only signed up with link connector, but also decided to become an amazon affiliate...in the same day. Biting off more than I can chew, for certain.

I realize all this is pure gobbletygook, so I will break it down for you in layman's terms, if you need to buy anything from amazon or are buying glasses anyway,  buy them from my banners. Yes, I am shameless, but at least I am not shady about it. I am upfront about it...so to keep with the 90s nostalgia theme- I will leave you with a song. Also, advice is absolutely welcome for those that have been there, done that.

  1. I hope our antics (and the great lengths we go to for you to get your 32 cents or whatever you get from my snotsucker purchase) don't get you in trouble with Amazon!

  4. Shoot! I was going to say just what Anonymous said but they stole my thunder! : )
I need to pick your brain about this ad thing. I think about doing it sometimes but fear having ads of stuff that I don't stand behind. Looks like you're choosing your own which could be much better. Good luck with it! I hope that you eventually make a mint!

  5. Blogging is SO MUCH more time consuming than most people realize, so it definitely makes sense to try to make a few bucks off of it! Can I ask a question? How does Passionfruit work? I saw someone else mention it the other day, and I was all ehhhhh?

    1. Passionfruit is a free service. You sign up and input how much you want different ads to cost etc (look at my "sponsor me" page for an example) and then it gives you the HTML info for your site. When someone buys an ad, they upload whatever size badge you have previously defined and pay the fee (which you decide and link up through paypal) and then you put up the badge for a period that you set....normally a month. It took a little messing around with...but wasn't too hard. I had seen Old Red Boots Lauren and Kaelah using it, so thought why not? Honestly, it hasn't been that great for me yet, but I haven't been hyping it as much as I probably could.
